Schaefer Portrait Challenge VI (2018)
Irene Kamahuialani Cockett Perry
Mike's portrait honoring 100-year old Irene Kamahuialani Cockett Perry was juried into the prestigious Schaefer Portrait Challenge! This is an incredible honor, as Aunty Irene was a Lana'i treasure. This painting along with 56 others were exhibited at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, January 16 - March 18, 2018.
"Irene Kamahuialani Cockett Perry, an artist at 100"
Small in size but mighty in spirit, Irene Perry's Hawaiian roots on Lana'i run eight generations deep. As a young girl, her family moved from Lāna‘i’s coastal village of Keomoku to Ko'ele's highlands. On the grounds of what is now the Lodge at Ko'ele, her father helped build Ka Lokahi Church and became its first minister. Irene's legacy, through words and Hawaiian arts, is inspiring. To honor her arc through 100 years of life and counting, I painted Irene on the steps of Ka Lokahi Church, strumming her cigar-box ukulele: a woman at peace and in tune with the spirit of Lana'i.
