Title: "Terrence's Ulua" (Giant Trevally) Gyotaku
Medium: Embellished Reproduction Print Media: Acrylic Paint and Prismacolors on Fine Art Paper
Size: Framed size: 34" x 64". This is a custom solid cherry wood frame and solid wood backing panel all hand made on the Island of Lana'i with Gallery UV Filtering Non Glare Acrylite.
Lāna`i artist Kristin Belew painstakingly embellished this life-size reproduction of her Gyotaku print with Prismacolors.
Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese style of fish printing where each original piece of art is taken right from the fish. Kristin applies acrylic paint to the actual fish then presses rice paper onto the specimen to receive the paint. She then adds in details! Each fish is eaten or used for bait afterwards.
Fun facts from Kristin:
"This monster of a fish was caught shore casting and brought in single handedly by a local Lāna‘i fisherman, Terrence Sarme. This Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis), known as Ulua in Hawaiian weighed in at 97 pounds! One month prior, I was lucky enough to print another Ulua that weighed in at 98.9! These two fish were actually caught by family members and ironically this fish print was about 1 inch larger than the first. It is likely the fish lost blood and water weight prior to its official weigh-in and could have easily been inducted into the “100 pound club”.
